We asked Joanne Meekings (the owner) to give us some information about Moulin de la Barde and the surrounding area and this is what she wrote.

Gîte Holidays near the Charente/Dordogne Border

Moulin de la Barde was once a paper mill, originally built in 1688. The property is now our home and also 2 gîtes on which we completed the renovations in June 2014 when we were officially opened by the Maire of Saint Séverin, our local village.

We are in a peaceful, rural location surrounded by fields, woodlands and rivers. There are plenty of walks and cycle routes nearby and you can also stroll into the village of Saint Séverin where you will find bars/restaurant, coffee shop, boulangerie, local SPAR supermarket, pharmacy, bank, paper shop and post office. Nearby you will find the picturesque village of Aubeterre-sur-Dronne with its monolithic church and pretty tree-lined square.

You can relax and enjoy the peace and quiet on our pool terrace, complete with 4m plunge pool and sunloungers, or explore our 5 acres of grounds including garden, woodland, orchard and rivers. You can also feed the chickens and ducks and enjoy their tasty free range eggs. We have a petanque pitch, trampoline, basketball and badminton net and also a few bikes which our guests are welcome to use free of charge. If you prefer to get out and about, there is plenty to do in the surrounding area, including: river beaches, canoeing, treetop zipwires, golf, wine tasting and sightseeing.

The market towns of Ribérac, Chalais and Verteillac are all within 25 minutes drive away or further afield you can explore Cognac, Bergerac, Périgueux, Sarlat, Bordeaux or Saint-Émilion.

The property is close to Angoulême, where the annual classic car race “Circuit des Remparts” takes place on the third weekend in September. The events take place over 3 days, with roads being closed off to create an exciting street circuit which has remained the same since 1939. One of the most thrilling and popular races is that of the Grand Prix Bugattis racing around the old narrow streets. If you like racing, you may also be interested in a visit to the nearby “Circuit de Haute Saintonge” which is a motorbike, Formula 3 and karting racetrack.

Our 2 gîtes are virtually identical and each sleep 6. They are suitable for couples, families and groups of friends. Each gîte has an upstairs with 3 bedrooms, 2 doubles and 1 twin, all with wall-mounted electric heaters. There is a family bathroom including a bath and an overhead shower and a heated towel rail.

Downstairs is open plan with a living area including a cosy wood-burning stove and TV with FreeSat and DVD player, a fully equipped kitchen area including a dishwasher, full-sized oven, tall fridge-freezer and a washing machine, a dining area and a downstairs toilet. Outside each gîte has its own private patio and there is a shared car park. There is free WiFi and all electricity, bedding and towels (except beach towels), baby equipment and taxe de sejour (local tourist tax) are included in the rental price.

We are open all year round and in the summer months of July and August the minimum stay is one week with a Saturday changeover day. Outside of these months the minimum stay is 4 nights with flexible changeover days. We are happy to take longer term rentals outside of the summer season, please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Situated in the South West of France just south of Angoulême, there are excellent motorway links from the ports, with approximate driving times to the property as follows: Caen (5 hours); St-Malo (5.5 hours); Le Havre (5.75 hours); Cherbourg (6.25 hours); Boulogne (7.25 hours); and Calais (7.5 hours). The nearest airports are Bergerac or Bordeaux.
