The cottage is on the edge of the pretty village of Mantilly in the Normandy National Park. It’s a lovely peaceful location, detached and with its own secluded walled garden with views over fields and countryside.
We love staying there as you get the privacy and relaxation of the cottage location, yet a short walk away there’s a boulangerie, shop, church and Village Lake, as well as a small restaurant/bar which does an amazing plat du jour at lunchtime. They do great value three course meals with wine or cider.
Mantilly has an annual festival called Course des poiriers where there is a cycle ride and walk around the country lanes, where you can stop and visit the farms where the cider is produced. Maps of the route are at the cottage and can be walked any time of the year.
The cottage has a good sized double bedroom, and in the central living/kitchen area there is a log burner, large sofa and table to seat 6, as well as a fully equipped kitchen area The second living room has a comfy sofa bed and satellite tv.
The bathroom has a full sized bath and power shower. There is a small portable washing machine also. All bed linen and towels are provided.
Outside there is a large table and chairs for outdoor dining, and a BBQ. The garden is a bit of a sun trap, and has a small lawn surrounded by fig trees and roses, as well as a gravelled area where you can play boules, and there is a set for guests to use. There are also bike racks at the rear of the cottage for storage.
There is loads of info at the cottage about local activities such as horse-riding, fishing, kayaking, walks and bike routes, as well as sites of interest such as beautiful gardens, Suisse Normandy forests, chapels and markets. Mont St Michel is only half an hour’s drive from the cottage and beaches are around an hour away.
It’s a great location to stop and explore for a week or so, and is ideally located for those who are touring France and intending to head further south after their stay.
It is an easy journey from most ports, Caen and St Malo are both around just over an hour away by car, mainly motorway before you turn off for a picturesque drive/ride through villages and towns such as Vire and Mortain, where you will see buildings of historic interest and quaint villages and market places.
Cherbourg is around 2 hours by car, Le Havre around 2.5 hours, Calais 4.5 hours or the airports - Dinard just over an hour away by car, and Rennes 1.5 hours.
There are several reviews on the Mantilly Cottage website from guests who have visited during the last twelve months. One of those reviews said;
"Relaxed and chilled…..just what we needed. The cottage was very private and comfortable with most of the creature comforts of home. Having English TV was great as it kept us in touch with what was going on even though we enjoy French as well.
There are so many beautiful places to visit around this area so this was very central for our purpose. I would highly recommend a stay at the Cottage. Thank you to the owners who were fantastic and so helpful."
